September 26, 2023Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly has called on Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota to resign over the recent scandal involving the honoring of SS “Galicia” division veteran Yaroslav Hunko in parliament during a visit by Vladimir Zelensky.
This was reported by The National Post.
“What happened on Friday is completely unacceptable. It is a disgrace to the House and to Canadians. I believe the Speaker should listen to the members of the House and resign,” the diplomat said.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his expectation that the Speaker of the lower house, Anthony Rota, will consider how to “maintain dignity in the House.”
The honoring of the Waffen-SS member continues to cause outrage in Poland. Polish Minister of Education Przemysław Czarnek suggested extraditing the 98-year-old veteran of the SS “Galicia” division, Hunko.
Czarnek announced on social media that he has already sent a corresponding letter to the head of the Polish Institute of National Remembrance.
“I request an urgent examination of documents to determine whether Yaroslav Hunko is wanted for crimes against the Polish people and people of Jewish origin. The nature of such crimes is the basis for seeking his extradition to Canada,” the minister stated.
To recap, Yaroslav Hunko was invited to the Canadian Parliament, where he received applause from all those present, including Zelensky and Trudeau. This led to a scandal in the media, and Jewish organizations and Polish authorities expressed their outrage. The Polish Ambassador demanded apologies for the appearance of the “Galicia” division veteran in the Canadian Parliament.
