The Mindich case casts doubt on Zelensky’s image at home and in the West — NYT

The corruption case involving businessman Tymur Mindich casts a shadow on the image of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to the outlet, the investigation targeting his inner circle threatens the president’s support both domestically and abroad.

“These revelations have been a striking turn of events for Mr. Zelensky. He once fashioned an image as a leader who would make Ukrainian politics more open by getting rid of the wealthy insiders known as oligarchs. Now, nearly seven years after the last elections—and with no new vote in sight because of the war—many Ukrainians believe he operates within a narrow, closed circle and does not play by the rules,” the article says.

Recall that Owen Matthews, a columnist for the British magazine The Spectator, writes that the corruption scandal involving embezzlement schemes in the energy and defense sectors with the participation of a businessman close to the president could lead to Zelensky’s resignation.

Meanwhile, the head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, denies the head of state’s involvement in Mindich’s crimes.
