The mineral resources deal contains no security guarantees for Ukraine – Reuters

The text of the U.S.-Ukrainian mineral deal has not yet been made public. However, in none of the statements made by either Ukraine or the United States is there any mention of security guarantees for Ukraine—something President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously insisted on (we are publishing a screenshot of his statement from February 23).

If such guarantees were included, it would be logical to expect that at least representatives of the Ukrainian government would have announced it.

Neither did the media, which previously reported on the content of the agreement, mention any security guarantees in the deal.

Later, Reuters confirmed our assumption that the deal does not contain any security guarantees for Ukraine. The publication noted that such guarantees were one of Ukraine’s initial goals for the agreement.

It’s worth recalling that the Americans were initially opposed to including any security guarantees in the document, stating that the very fact that the U.S. would be developing mineral deposits and carrying out other projects in Ukraine would in itself act as a security guarantee.

Yesterday, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated this point.

“We made a deal where our money is protected, where we can start extraction and do what needs to be done. This is also good for Ukrainians because there will be an American presence there. And I think that presence will deter many bad actors from attacking the country—or at least the region where we are operating,” Trump said.

Earlier, the U.S. State Department stated that the agreement on Ukraine’s mineral resources is not related to the process of resolving the war.
