27.03.2024 - 18:42The Ministry for Veterans Affairs of Ukraine plans to develop a nationwide map of burial sites for deceased military personnel.
This was announced by the Acting Minister for Veterans Affairs, serviceman Alexander Porkhun.
“At present, the state institution, the National Memorial Military Cemetery, is developing a powerful website that will feature a map of burial sites. We are not only including burial sites on the map of the National Memorial Military Cemetery. We have ambitious plans to create this burial site map throughout the territory of our state,” he said.
Porkhun noted that the map will contain information about each fallen soldier, including their place of service and death, as well as a brief history of their life. Preparatory work for the first phase of burials has begun today. Construction of the first phase is planned to commence on June 1.
According to Porkhun, the first burials at the National Memorial Military Cemetery may start in late summer or early autumn of 2024, with the entire complex expected to be completed by 2027.
In addition to the cemetery itself, the overall complex will include a central alley, a large flagpole, a crematorium, a memorial to fallen defenders, two mourning halls, a central square, parking for vehicles, administrative buildings, technical facilities, and a museum.
The Acting Minister also mentioned that cemetery workers will take care of the heroes’ graves, considering the religious views of the buried soldiers.
“There will be gravestones on which symbols of the heroes’ faith will be applied,” Porkhun added.
