16.01.2025 - 05:03The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications cannot influence the broadcasting of stories about non-evidence-based medicine, numerology, and psychics on TV channels participating in the unified news marathon.
The ministry made this statement in response to a query from the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.
Journalists asked officials whether it is permissible to air esoteric practices, stories about numerology, interviews with psychics and fortune-tellers, Tarot card readings, and similar content during the news marathon.
“We inform you that the ministry cannot influence the professional activities of journalists and the editorial policies of media outlets, particularly regarding stories about alternative medicine, esoteric practices, numerology, psychics, and the like, which are created by TV channels whose programs are broadcast as part of the ‘Unified News’ information marathon,” the ministry replied.
The ministry also emphasized that the Constitution and other laws prohibit censorship and unjustified interference by state authorities in the activities of media entities and the professional work of journalists.
As reported by media outlets, in 2023, following the catastrophe at the Kakhovka reservoir dam, Ukrainian Tarot readers and psychics began posting en masse on social media, claiming that the explosion of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant “freed the souls of the Cossack sorcerers.”
Media also cited data suggesting that nearly half of the Ukrainians surveyed believe in astrology, Tarot readings, and psychics.
