January 2, 2024The number of Ukrainian refugees in Germany in 2023 increased slightly.
Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung reports this, citing data from the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, 1.132 million people who entered the country due to the war are registered in Germany. A year ago, there were 1.045 million.
The state of North Rhine-Westphalia received the most refugees. Here, 231,000 Ukrainians are registered. Bavaria follows in second place with 158,505, followed by Baden-Württemberg with 154,749. The smallest number of Ukrainian refugees is in Bremen (12,188 people) and Saarland (15,328 people).
Recall that in October 2023, the German Minister of Labor, Hubertus Heil, effectively announced a change in the course of the FRG government regarding the employment of refugees. According to the minister, “the language barrier is decreasing. It’s time to go to work.” The migration crisis and labor shortages forced Berlin to demand that benefit recipients quickly find employment, even if it’s not in their field.
“We are taking comprehensive actions so that Ukrainian citizens in Germany would all now enter the German labor market,” said Chancellor Olaf Scholz, addressing the Bundestag the next day.
