Russia responded to reports of Zelensky’s plan failing at the G7 summit
June 18, 2025There are growing doubts within President Volodymyr Zelensky’s circle about whether he should attend the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague next week, due to the lack of any guarantees that U.S. President Donald Trump will be present. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has assured that the head of the White House has promised to attend the event.
This was reported by the British newspaper The Guardian, citing Ukrainian officials.
Ukrainian diplomats were left “disappointed and embittered” by Trump’s early departure from the G7 summit and his refusal to meet with Zelensky or make Ukraine a priority—especially after Zelensky flew 5,000 miles to attend the conference.
“The main goal of the meeting — to try to gain Trump’s support in order to pressure Vladimir Putin into agreeing to a ceasefire — was nullified by the U.S. president’s sudden exit,” the publication writes.
“Another blow” for Kyiv was the American veto of a joint statement on Ukraine, as the language was considered “too anti-Russian” and potentially damaging to negotiations with Putin.
“There is a constant risk that Ukraine becomes a victim of external events and Trump’s short-lived attention span. Vladimir Putin knows this, and perhaps that’s why such a massive attack on Ukraine occurred last night. Ahead of the summit, there were many promises, including proposals for new deliveries of U.S. weapons,” a Ukrainian official told the paper.
As a reminder, Zelensky also left the G7 summit early, shortly after Trump.
