August 5, 2024The far-right Austrian Freedom Party, which is vying for victory in the country’s parliamentary elections, has formed an alliance with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. If the party wins the elections in September, this alliance could not only intensify defiance against Brussels but also jeopardize the already fragile consensus regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
This information reported by Reuters.
While many other right-wing parties in EU countries have taken a more moderate path, the leader of the Austrian Freedom Party, Herbert Kickl, is closely collaborating with Viktor Orban and has joined his conservative alliance, established in June.
“We are entering what I would call a new era in European politics,” Kickl stated.
This could pose a headache for European Union leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Orban has previously blocked or delayed important EU decisions on Ukraine, including the imposition of sanctions against Moscow and the allocation of aid to Kyiv, while securing concessions from Brussels.
In July, Kickl referred to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as a “war arsonist” and advocated for a “peaceful settlement between Ukraine and Russia.”
