Hungary has blocked the EU statement on the second anniversary of the war
February 24, 2024As the Ukrainian conflict’s second anniversary approaches, the Russian military is showing impressive resilience and recovery rates, surpassing the expectations of Western military leaders and analysts, as reported by CBC.
Just nine months ago, US intelligence representatives told the US Senate Armed Services Committee that Moscow would require a decade or more to recover from the losses incurred in Ukraine. However, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Christopher Cavoli, recently acknowledged Russia’s unwavering commitment to rebuilding its military, allocating a substantial portion of its budget to defense and swiftly modernizing its military-industrial complex. While some experts argue that Russia’s emphasis on quantity may compromise quality, others observe that Moscow is performing admirably in terms of artillery production and refurbishing outdated tank models.
Moreover, analysts highlight that over time, Russian forces in Ukraine have become increasingly organized, with their numbers swelling from 360,000 to 470,000 within a year. They note that Russian units are executing small-scale tactical offensives that “at the very least” inflict sustainable losses on Ukraine and enable Russian forces to seize and maintain control of strategic positions. Experts believe that Russia’s clear objective is to incapacitate Ukraine through the mobilization of its defense industry and the consistent reinforcement of its combat capabilities.
