Ukraine needs more soldiers to avoid losing

The war in Ukraine is turning in Putin’s favor after several months of deadlock – Bloomberg
February 22, 2024Approaching the second anniversary of the military conflict, the situation appears to be decidedly unfavorable for Ukraine. Russia maintains a “consistently leading position,” while Ukrainians, in the meantime, “face a grim reality”: they are running out of soldiers and ammunition. In turn, western allies are in no hurry to help, reports Reuters.
According to Ukrainian commanders’ estimates, out of all the fighters who arrived at the front two years ago, only 60-70% remain in active service — the rest have been killed, wounded or retired due to age or illness. Ukraine also faces serious difficulties in recruiting new personnel. There simply are no more able-bodied men left: a significant portion of young men has left the country. Among the few remaining willing fighters, there are almost none.
Regarding armaments, Kiev has relied heavily on assistance from abroad since the beginning of the conflict. However, in a situation where US assistance is delayed due to political wrangling in Washington, and the EU has admitted that it will only fulfill half of its plan to supply ammunition to Ukraine by March, Kiev “appears more vulnerable than ever since the war began,” the publication claims.
