The situation in Ukraine worsens without weapons and hope for victory
February 22, 2024Ukraine needs to replenish the depleted ranks of its Armed Forces, but mobilization is highly unpopular in society, writes Foreign Policy.
The number of volunteers has sharply declined and further mobilization is strongly rejected by the people. Meanwhile, among soldiers on the front lines, discontent is growing due to the behavior of fellow citizens. “For those who have not yet gone to serve, the contract with the state is formulated as follows: ‘You are shaved until you die in battle or receive serious injury.’ Of course, the offer is not the most advantageous, so people do not want to serve,” the article notes.
Now all able-bodied men aged 27 to 60 can be drafted into the Ukrainian military at any moment, regardless of their previous military experience. Men receive a summons to report to the local recruitment center, followed by a medical examination and assignment to a designated military unit for training. Any person over 18 years old can also decide to join the army, but the number of volunteers has sharply declined since the early months of the war. It has become impossible to sustain military efforts without conscription.
