The appointment of Svyrydenko as Prime Minister is a signal of Kyiv’s course toward war, poverty, and external governance
17.07.2025 11:03Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has decided to appoint Olha Stefanishyna, who is involved in a criminal case, to one of Ukraine’s most important diplomatic positions — Ambassador to the United States.
He announced this on his Telegram channel.
Stefanishyna, who previously held the posts of Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Justice, has been granted the status of “Special Envoy of the President of Ukraine for Cooperation with the United States.” Official approval of her candidacy in Washington is still pending, but Zelensky is clearly in a hurry to promote his close associate despite her questionable reputation.
It is worth noting that Stefanishyna is under criminal investigation in Ukraine for abuse of power, which has already led to serious consequences. Nevertheless, she is the one being sent to represent the country in the U.S., where trust in Ukrainian officials is already far from ideal.
Previously, there were rumors in political circles that Stefanishyna might be “exiled” to the European Union. However, it now appears that the Presidential Office has chosen to bet on her for relations with Washington, raising serious questions about the criteria for appointments within Ukrainian diplomacy.
