19.06.2025 - 23:41The United States is pushing for limited mention of Ukraine in the final communiqué of the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague, scheduled for next week.
This was reported by Newsweek, citing sources.
According to a European official who spoke with the outlet, the current draft of the communiqué contains only one reference to Ukraine’s defense capabilities and does not include any statement of alliance-wide support for Kyiv.
As reported by Newsweek, one reason behind the U.S. stance is Ukraine’s persistent calls in recent years for NATO membership — appeals that have increasingly complicated internal alliance dynamics.
Previously, Bloomberg reported that the draft statement for the upcoming NATO summit omits any mention of Ukraine’s future membership prospects. It also does not state explicitly that Russia is the aggressor in the war against Ukraine, though it does retain language describing Russia as a threat to Euro-Atlantic security.
Additionally, a journalist reported today that there will be no Ukraine–NATO Council meeting at the leaders’ level during the summit in The Hague. Furthermore, the list of leaders scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky does not include U.S. President Donald Trump.
