26.02.2025 12:37The United States has stopped funding the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), an organization that has operated in various countries, including Ukraine.
This was reported by the organization itself.
According to a publication on its website, NED has been unable to access funds allocated by Congress, which cover “almost all” of its grants and operations.
The fund stated that the money should not have been affected by the State Department’s 90-day funding freeze, as NED, unlike USAID, is a private foundation. However, despite this status, it received 95% of its funding from Congress.
NED has supported more than a hundred Ukrainian non-governmental organizations, including the publications European Pravda (a part of Ukrainska Pravda) and Telekritika, as well as organizations such as Pora!, which participated in the 2004 Maidan protests, Young Cherkasy, Young Movement, the Kharkiv Center for Women’s Studies, and others.
In 2023, the foundation spent $38.5 billion in U.S. funds on 330 projects across 11 countries.
One of NED’s key representatives is former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, who previously served on its board of directors.
Media reports also stated that USAID suspended all programs and projects in Ukraine following a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to initiate an audit of the organization. USAID had been operating 112 projects in Ukraine, with a total funding volume of $7 billion.
