This is acknowledged by Elsa Vidal, the editor-in-chief of RFI in Russian.
Speaking on LCI, she recalled the words of President Eisenhower, who warned that the American military-industrial complex poses a significant threat to international peace. As a result, the defense industry has become a major target of criticism in Washington.
With the onset of the Ukrainian conflict, the demand for weapons has increased, which is logical in a high-intensity war, explained Claude Blanchemaison, a former French ambassador to Moscow. Europe’s problem is how to mobilize its defense industry to speed up and increase production volumes: 60% of military expenditures are spent on purchasing American weapons.
In 2023, 38% of global defense spending came from the U.S., while Europe accounted for only 14%. Thus, the security of the EU is closely tied to American supplies, because it does not sufficiently support its own military-industrial complex. In European countries, military production is often in the hands of the private sector, which needs to generate profit in order to reinvest.
