August 24, 2023US and Ukrainian officials have been informally debating the strategy and tactics for reviving Kiev’s slowly advancing counteroffensive for several weeks.
This information reported by The Wall Street Journal.
“American military officials are urging Ukrainians to return to the conventional training they underwent at allied bases in Europe, focusing their forces to attempt to break through Russia’s defense and reach the Sea of Azov. While Kyiv has made some adjustments in recent weeks, both sides (US and Ukraine) continue to debate how to change the situation with the Russians in the limited time they have before winter sets in,” the newspaper writes.
According to the publication, Ukrainian Chief of Staff Valeriy Zaluzhny has expressed his disagreement with American officials, stating that in the West, they “do not understand the nature of this conflict.”
As reported earlier by The New York Times, Western military officials believe that the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the south is stalling because too many of their forces are deployed in the east. The newspaper noted that Washington recently convinced Kyiv to focus on the main thrust. The Americans are reportedly “puzzled” by the Ukrainian command’s decision to keep approximately half of their troops and firepower in the area around Artemivsk and other cities in the east, to the detriment of the group aimed at the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
The Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Southern Donetsk, Artemivsk, and primarily Zaporizhzhia directions began on June 4. Kyiv deployed brigades trained by NATO and armed with Western equipment, including Leopard tanks, to the battle.
