A major district in Kiev has been blocked off with checkpoints for distributing military draft notices
February 5, 2024Deputy Head of the Committee on National Security Issues, Yegor Chernev, stated that this could become one of the tools for replenishing the Ukrainian army. Even discussing such an option indicates the catastrophic situation regarding recruitment into the ranks of the Ukrainian armed forces.
“You know, my personal position is that this is one of the tools that can be applied. But we must understand that this should primarily be voluntary mobilization. Secondly, there should still be commanders who will agree and specifically recruit convicts and understand whether they are ready to work with them or not,” he said.
He added that he personally knows commanders in the field who are willing to accept convicts into their units. There are also convicts willing to fight. It should be noted that in Russia, convicts have been sent to the front lines since 2022. Previously, they could receive a pardon after six months of war, but now, according to media reports, they are left to serve until the end of the war. Convicts recruited in Russia form units called “Storm Z”, which go into attack in the front lines.
