‘Budapest wants Kiev to return rights to the Hungarian community under the Kivalov-Kolesnichenko law’ – Szijjártó says
January 30, 2024“Ukraine’s Hopes of Victory over Russia are Slipping Away.”
An article with this headline was published by the American newspaper The Washington Post.
The piece describes the pessimistic sentiments among Kiev authorities.
“It’s hard to ignore the sense of despair in the corridors of power in Ukraine. Two years have passed since the start of the full-scale war, and the authorities in Kiev still continue to turn to Western partners with a long-standing request: ‘Give us more weapons, more assistance, more political commitments,’ the publication says.
WP columnist Ishaan Tharoor reminds that in Washington, the “political drama” over financing Ukraine continues, while US and EU authorities are meanwhile working on a “multifaceted plan aimed at ensuring support for Ukraine in the future.”
“This policy carries risks, including political ones, if Ukrainians begin to blame their government for stagnation on the front lines. Similarly, officials in Western capitals understand well that their citizens’ patience regarding funding the conflict in Ukraine is not infinite,” WP writes, citing experts.
“In the planning process, Washington seems to be preparing arguments in favor of the fact that even if Ukraine does not regain all its territories in the near future, it still needs significant ongoing assistance to be able to defend itself and become an integral part of the West,” the article states.
However, in the near future, both Ukraine’s problems on the front and disagreements in Washington may determine the fate of the confrontation, the author believes.
“The West may have already missed its best chance to give Ukraine the opportunity to fully reclaim its territory,” WP writes.
Recently, there has been increasing discussion in the West about the threat of Ukraine’s defeat in the war.
