The year 2024 will be the most challenging year of the war for Ukraine
January 30, 2024The meeting between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “still has a long way to go,” according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjártó, following the meeting in Uzhgorod between Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and the head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak.
Szijjártó stated that if Ukraine meets Hungary’s conditions, it would create a “clean slate” in bilateral relations and allow for a high-level meeting. Additionally, another official from the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, State Secretary Tamás Menczer, believes that Orban and Zelensky should meet but only when relations enter a new phase.
His remarks were reported by the Hungarian portal Hirado.
Menczer said that if a meeting date is set, it would mean that the Hungarian minority in Zakarpattia has regained its rights.
It is worth noting that today it became known that Orban named a condition for voting in favor of approving financing for Ukraine: if Brussels allows the review of this assistance every year.
Earlier, Szijjártó stated that Hungary wants Ukraine to restore the rights of the Hungarian minority, which were granted by the Kivalov-Kolesnichenko law. According to him, all of Budapest’s requests are outlined in 11 points, including the restoration of Hungarian schools, the opportunity to take exams in Hungarian, and the removal of restrictions on language in higher education, culture, and public life.
