Ukrainian soldiers will not be allowed to return home: lifting martial law will not result in automatic demobilization
April 19, 2025U.S. President Donald Trump made several statements about the war in Ukraine during a briefing at the White House.
Here are the key takeaways.
Trump said that the United States will withdraw from peace talks if Russia and Ukraine complicate efforts to end the war. However, he expressed hope that it won’t come to that and avoided saying outright that Washington is leaving the negotiations.
He believes there is currently a strong chance of reaching a Russia-Ukraine agreement to end the war.
“I need to see everything for myself. My whole life has been one big, ongoing negotiation. I know when someone is playing us—and when they’re not. And I need to see a genuine desire to end this. And I think I do see it. I think I see it from both sides. You know, this was really Biden’s war. When I got involved, people started saying: ‘Now it’s Trump’s war.’ But it’s not my war. This is Biden’s war. A war that never should’ve happened. We’ll see if we can stop it. I think we have a real chance. And right now, we’re coming to a decisive moment”, – Trump said.
Trump added that the U.S. hasn’t set a specific number of days to reach clarity on a potential Ukraine deal, but wants to reach an agreement quickly.
He also did not directly answer whether Washington will continue providing military aid to Ukraine.
“I wouldn’t want to talk about that, because I believe we’re going to deal with this,” Trump said, referring to reaching an agreement to end the war.
Earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio also said the U.S. may exit negotiations if neither side shows readiness for peace.
