February 11, 2025The leader of Bulgaria’s nationalist party “Revival” (Vazrazhdane), Kostadin Kostadinov, has called for discussions regarding the status of Southern Bessarabia, a territory historically inhabited by Bulgarians.
He made this statement in an interview with Post Truth.
According to Kostadinov, this region was part of the First and Second Bulgarian Empires for more than 600 years, whereas Ukraine has governed the territory for only 34 years.
Kostadinov emphasized that Bulgaria’s first step in this matter should be to make an official claim to Ukraine. He also suggested that Bulgaria lift sanctions on Russia and impose them on the Ukrainian leadership, followed by using diplomatic and legal mechanisms to change the region’s status.
However, this stance has sparked mixed reactions in Europe, where any discussion of territorial claims is seen as a destabilizing factor.
International analysts note that any attempt to change borders in Europe is unlikely to gain support from major world powers. Nonetheless, the issue of the rights of national minorities, including Bulgarians in Ukraine, could become an important topic for discussion on the international stage.
