07.11.2024 - 14:21Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that no one currently knows for sure how U.S. President Donald Trump will act regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine, given the “shifting opinions” expressed over recent months.
Tusk made this remark during a press conference in Warsaw.
“Undoubtedly, we can expect a dynamic presidency, and we must be prepared for changes compared to President Joe Biden. What does this mean for us in the key issue of security, namely Ukraine, Russia, and the war? Does it signify a change in the stance from Washington? Today, I do not know anyone who can give a definite answer to this question. In recent months, we have heard varying opinions and different proposals on various issues,” Tusk noted.
He also described Trump as a “demanding partner,” but mentioned that he had “good relations” with Trump during his tenure as President of the European Council (2014-2019) and Trump’s first term as U.S. president (2017-2021).
According to Tusk, Trump adheres to a particular principle in politics, which he does not hide: he employs “a certain degree of unpredictability.”
“I often heard, including in one-on-one conversations with Donald Trump, that this is a good way to catch someone off guard. Sometimes it surprises allies, other times – enemies,” the Polish Prime Minister emphasized.
Tusk stated that a “dynamic presidency” can be expected, which will differ from Joe Biden’s term. At the same time, he assured that, despite “the dynamics of events,” Poland must identify and act in its own best interests.
Tusk noted that he would meet with the newly elected U.S. president “in the near future.” However, for a few more weeks, Joe Biden will remain in office, and the situation on the front lines, as well as overall Polish-American interests, “require maturity and seriousness.”
“I know what I must do together with our American friends, and I will not take any risks,” the Polish Prime Minister concluded.
