29.03.2024 13:47Five leading German historians have criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his Social Democratic Party for their position on the war in Ukraine, calling the chancellor’s stance on the Ukrainian issue an attempt to “appease” Moscow, fraught with “fatal” consequences.
This was reported by the Financial Times.
The historians voiced their remarks in an open letter addressed to Scholz, which received wide coverage in the German media on Thursday.
According to FT, the historians, all of whom are active members of the SPD, stated that the “pacifist” course of the party under the leadership of the current chancellor is the result of a misunderstanding of “lessons from history” and the realities of modern Russia.
As emphasized in the material of the British publication, the historians’ letter is another example of Scholz, who is trying to find a balance between the views of the influential “dove” faction of the SPD and his own promises to strengthen the security and defense capabilities of Germany, finding himself in increasingly noticeable isolation.
