22.05.2025 - 08:32U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his recent conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin resulted in significant progress toward resolving the war in Ukraine.
Trump made this statement during a press conference with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House.
“I believe we’ve made significant progress, but it’s a bloodbath… These are not our soldiers. This is Ukraine and this is Russia. But if we can save 5,000 lives, we’ll do it. We’re pretty good at that. But it’s a very bad situation,” Trump said.
He also spoke about a phone call he made to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a month ago:
“I called Zelensky, and they said: ‘He’s in South Africa.’ And I said: ‘What the hell is he doing in South Africa?’” Trump told reporters.
As a reminder, following his conversation with Putin, Trump made a series of new statements about Ukraine. Among them, he said that “Zelensky is not easy to deal with”, and even suggested that the United States might withdraw from the Ukraine negotiations.
Western media also reported that Trump signaled to European leaders that the U.S. would leave Ukraine and Russia to negotiate directly.
