Kyiv Mayor Klitschko urged residents to spend the night in warming centers or leave the city
23.01.2026 10:43Donald Trump said that Volodymyr Zelensky is ready to agree to a deal on a peace settlement in Ukraine and that the parameters of possible agreements are already known to the parties, but he did not disclose them to journalists.
The U.S. president told reporters this aboard the plane on the way from Zurich to Washington, adding that the parties have been discussing these agreements for six or seven months and that Zelensky, according to him, came to Davos and said he wanted to make a deal.
At the same time, Kyiv’s public position on the key block remains more cautious. According to Reuters, after meeting Trump in Davos on January 22, Zelensky said that the parameters of U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine have been agreed, but the issue of territories remains unresolved.
Against this background, U.S. President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff said in Davos on January 22 that the talks have effectively been reduced to one last issue, without specifying what exactly it is about. The parties have repeatedly pointed to uncoordinated actions on territory, and Vladimir Putin, in particular, demands that Ukraine cede those roughly 20% of Donetsk region that remain under the control of Ukrainian forces.
Previously, Zelensky did not agree to give up territory. He also did not say that he discussed the territorial issue with Trump at the January 22 meeting. Moreover, he said that the Donbas issue will be raised at the upcoming talks.
In the coming days, the sides plan to move to a more intensive format. Negotiators from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States will hold trilateral meetings for the first time in Abu Dhabi on Friday and Saturday, January 23 and 24.
