Flattery and a showy gesture: Zelensky acknowledged the problem of “busification” in Ukraine
30.01.2026 - 10:46U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he asked Russian President Vladimir Putin not to strike Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities for a week while the region is experiencing extreme cold.
The call for a pause in attacks on the Ukrainian capital came as Russia has been hitting key infrastructure facilities in the country, leaving many residents without heat in the middle of winter.
“I personally asked President Putin not to shell Kyiv and the cities for a week during this… extraordinary cold,” Trump said during a Cabinet meeting at the White House.
Trump added that Putin “agreed to it,” though there was no confirmation from Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that at the talks in Abu Dhabi the delegations discussed halting strikes on energy infrastructure facilities and expressed hope that any agreements would be upheld.
“An important statement by President Trump about the possibility of providing Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with security from Russian strikes during this period of winter cold. Energy is the foundation of life, and we appreciate the efforts of our partners to help us protect lives. Thank you, President Trump! The teams talked about this in the Emirates. We expect the agreements to be fulfilled. Steps to de-escalate the conflict contribute to real progress toward ending the war,” Zelenskyy said in a statement.
Last week, Zelenskyy said that more than half of homes in Kyiv were without heating and that much of the city was without electricity following Russian strikes.
Peace talks are set to resume on Sunday amid doubts about Moscow’s commitment to a settlement.
