Media outlets named an unusual shared goal of Russia and Ukraine in the talks
20.02.2026 - 08:04U.S. President Donald Trump said he supports Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Hungary’s upcoming parliamentary elections.
He made the statement at the first meeting of the Peace Council.
According to Trump, Orbán has his “full and absolute support” in the election.
“Not everyone in Europe likes that support—but that’s fine. He is doing an incredible job, especially on immigration, unlike some countries that have harmed themselves,” the American leader said.
As is known, the Hungarian prime minister supports Trump’s course toward a significant reduction or an end to military aid to Ukraine.
Orbán, meanwhile, accused Ukraine a few days ago of interfering in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, which are set for April 12. He called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to stop doing this.
Relations between Kyiv and Budapest have sharply deteriorated recently. Zelenskyy, for example, made a public and fairly insulting remark about Orbán.
At the Munich Security Conference, he said: “Viktor can think about how to grow his belly, rather than how to build up an army to stop Russian tanks from returning to the streets of Budapest.”
Orbán, in turn, called Ukraine an enemy of Hungary because of demands to abandon Russian energy resources.
