The suspect detained in Germany in connection with the murder of lawyer Andriy Portnov turned out to be a Ukrainian
26.02.2026 08:06During yesterday’s phone call with Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump said the war should be stopped within a month so that a peace agreement could be reached by summer.
Axios reported this, citing a Ukrainian official and two other sources.
The sources described the call as “very friendly and positive.” Trump told the Ukrainian president that the conflict “has gone on too long” and added that he would like to end it within a month.
The two sides also separately discussed the idea of a trilateral summit involving Trump, Zelensky, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the sources, Trump is ready to work on organizing such an event if the early-March meeting of U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian delegations produces greater progress.
According to a Ukrainian source, Trump also confirmed his readiness to provide Ukraine with meaningful U.S. security guarantees as part of a possible peace agreement.
The call took place a day before talks in Geneva, where Trump’s special envoys Jared Kushner and Steven Witkoff are expected to meet with the Ukrainian delegation. According to sources, separate contacts between U.S. representatives and Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev are also possible in Geneva.
Yesterday Zelensky said he spoke with Trump about issues that U.S. and Ukrainian representatives would work on in Geneva, as well as preparations for the next meeting of the full negotiating teams in a trilateral format in early March.
Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance expressed confidence that the United States should continue making efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
