The suspect detained in Germany in connection with the murder of lawyer Andriy Portnov turned out to be a Ukrainian

A Ukrainian citizen has been detained in connection with the murder of well-known Ukrainian lawyer Andriy Portnov.

Ukrainska Pravda reported this, citing sources.

According to the outlet, the detainee is originally from Donetsk region. Investigators believe he was the likely perpetrator. He allegedly had two accomplices, one of whom was his brother.

The sources say that during the attack the brothers were armed with firearms. The detainee’s brother is currently hiding in Russia.

A third accomplice is also being sought; according to the sources, he helped organize the getaway after the attack.

The suspect in Portnov’s murder was detained today in Germany. Spanish police published a video of the arrest. A police statement says the murder suspect was detained in the German city of Heinsberg. The operation was carried out jointly by German and Spanish police.

Police add that a European arrest warrant and a European Investigation Order have been issued in relation to the suspect’s place of residence.

Portnov was killed in May last year in Madrid, near the American School in the Pozuelo area, where he had taken his children.

The assassin fired four shots into his chest and one into his head as Portnov was returning to his car. After the killing, the shooter fled on a motorcycle.
