31.07.2026 05:03The United States is considering delaying or blocking the candidate put forward by President Emmanuel Macron for the next French ambassador to Washington.
The move threatens to further inflame diplomatic tensions between the longstanding allies, Reuters reported.
No final decision has been made, but the dispute has provoked serious anger among senior officials in the Trump administration, according to four sources who spoke to Reuters.
The cause of the conflict
The crisis stems from a Friday vote in which the United States joined Russia, North Korea, and seven other countries in opposing the renewal of Volker Türk’s mandate as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Türk had criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza and called for investigations into deaths at U.S. immigration facilities. In the General Assembly vote, he was reappointed: 144 in favor, 10 against, and 13 abstentions.
On Saturday, France’s mission to the UN posted the following on X:
“The U.S. used to be a beacon of human rights. No more. The world no longer listens to them.”
One Reuters source said the post had been reviewed and approved through official channels, dismissing suggestions that it had been published by a junior staff member.
Tensions escalated sharply on Monday when the U.S. delegation walked out of a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine just as French Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont was speaking. According to the Associated Press, U.S. Deputy Representative Dan Negrea told the Council that the delegation would continue to walk out until France “abandons its patronizing and disrespectful rhetoric.”
Ambassador in limbo
Macron has submitted the candidacy of Aurélien Lechevallier — the current chief of staff to Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot — for the post of next French ambassador to Washington. Paris had expected him to take up the role by September.
“The United States is extremely disappointed by the irresponsible and disrespectful statements made by the French side. We are responding to their comments accordingly,” a State Department spokesperson told Reuters.
A U.S. refusal to accept the candidate or a prolonged delay in the process would be highly unusual. Washington very rarely publicly delays or rejects ambassadorial nominations — such disagreements are typically resolved in private.
The broader context of the dispute
The quarrel fits into a broader pattern of deteriorating Franco-American relations during Trump’s second presidential term. The allies have clashed over tariffs, NATO defense spending, and a State Department program funding organizations that promote “civilizational self-confidence” in Europe. U.S. Ambassador to France Charles Kushner has twice ignored summonses from the French government following diplomatic incidents.
A French diplomatic representative attempted to smooth things over, saying: “A difference of opinion over a particular vote does not call into question the quality of our relationship or our ability to work together.”
