30.07.2026 20:06On July 29, the Ukrainian Air Force lost an F-16 fighter jet during a combat sortie to intercept Russian aerial targets. The pilot ejected and was safely evacuated.
According to a statement by the Ukrainian Air Force on Telegram, contact with the aircraft was lost during a mission to intercept enemy aerial targets in one of the front-line sectors. Preliminary information indicates that an emergency situation arose on board, forcing the pilot to eject. The pilot was taken to a medical facility for examination — officials confirmed his life is not in danger. Specialists and law enforcement personnel are working at the crash site; no civilian casualties or damage have been reported. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
This accident marks at least the fifth F-16 loss since Ukraine began combat operations with the aircraft in mid-2024. Three pilots were killed in previous incidents. The first loss occurred on August 26, 2024, when pilot Oleksiy Mes was killed during a massive Russian missile and drone strike. On April 12, 2025, Captain Pavlo Ivanov was killed, and on June 29, 2025, Lieutenant Colonel Maksym Ustymenko was killed while repelling a large-scale Russian offensive. In May 2025, another aircraft was lost — on that occasion the pilot also successfully ejected due to an on-board malfunction.
The loss came just one week after U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine confirmed that a Ukrainian F-16 had shot down a Russian Su-35 fighter in aerial combat for the first time. The milestone was assessed by the American side as underscoring the growing role of the aircraft in Ukraine’s defense.
Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Norway have committed to transferring approximately 80 F-16 aircraft to Ukraine, delivered in batches. With a limited number of trained pilots and ongoing aerial threats from Russia, each aircraft loss undermines combat capability that Ukraine will not be able to restore in the short term.
