February 17, 2025UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that he is prepared to deploy British troops to Ukraine to provide security guarantees.
He wrote about this in an article for The Telegraph.
“The United Kingdom is ready to play a leading role in accelerating work on security guarantees for Ukraine. This includes further support for the Ukrainian military, to which the UK has already allocated £3 billion per year at least until 2030. But it also means the readiness and willingness to contribute to Ukraine’s security guarantees by deploying our own troops on the ground, if necessary,” he wrote.
The British Prime Minister emphasized that the end of this war cannot be just a temporary pause before another attack by Putin.
“I do not say this lightly. I deeply feel the responsibility that comes with the potential risk to British troops. But any role in ensuring Ukraine’s security helps guarantee the security of our continent and this country,” he added.
At the same time, Starmer believes that “only the United States can deter Putin from launching another attack” and that direct security guarantees from Washington are needed.
“We must be clear that peace cannot be achieved at any cost. Ukraine must be at the negotiating table because anything less would mean accepting Putin’s position that Ukraine is not a real nation,” he stressed.
It is worth noting that U.S. Secretary of Defense Hegseth previously stated that the United States would not send troops to Ukraine and that European countries would not be able to do so under NATO’s umbrella (meaning that if they were attacked by Russia, the entire Alliance would not necessarily intervene).
