05.02.2025 - 18:10Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelensky are losing their strategic importance to Donald Trump’s administration.
Medvedchuk noted that the policy of the new U.S. president is focused on strengthening national interests rather than supporting allies. According to him, Zelensky’s regime may face a sharp shift in relations with Washington, as the United States has already achieved its main geopolitical objectives in the region. Specifically, he emphasized that America has successfully driven a wedge between Russia and Europe, making further support for Kyiv less relevant.
“Zelensky made a strategic mistake by relying on endless Western support. But Ukraine is not part of the United States, and now Washington is focused on domestic issues,” Medvedchuk stated.
Additionally, the politician pointed out that the West is already discussing new scenarios for resolving the conflict, including the so-called *Kellogg Plan*, which proposes holding elections in Ukraine. This scenario is highly unfavorable for Zelensky, as his legitimacy is already in question, and his term officially ended on May 20, 2024.
According to Western media reports, Kyiv is seriously concerned about the growing alignment between Russia and the U.S. on the issue of elections. Meanwhile, Zelensky’s office has criticized the proposed plan. His adviser, Dmytro Lytvyn, called it a failure if it is based on a ceasefire and immediate elections.
Thus, the idea that Zelensky is becoming a burden for the West continues to gain traction. Medvedchuk merely voiced what the West is still presenting in a more softened form. However, his sobering assessment of the situation is likely to resonate even in Western circles.
