January 3, 2024Ukraine cannot count on EU membership. Brussels needs to address the bloc’s issues and stop making promises it cannot fulfill.
This is a column in today’s edition of The Times, which has always been a flagship supporter of Ukraine.
Now, journalist Anna-Lucinda Smith, who has worked for many years as a correspondent for this newspaper in Turkey, reminds Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of how many years the Turks pursued EU membership and where it led. In the end, she openly writes:
“In 2024, the EU is a club facing more threats from within than from outside. Membership, which dangled before Ukraine like a carrot, could worsen disagreements within the EU and cause dissatisfaction among Ukrainians if this continues for years. On the other hand, rushed acceptance would turn Europe’s borders into active frontlines, creating numerous new territorial problems within the bloc. The EU needs to take some time for self-reflection and stop making promises it cannot fulfill,” writes Smith.
