Ukraine confronts a challenging winter due to diminishing global assistance, particularly from the United States

A year ago, Zelensky was hailed as a hero in Washington, but this time his requests for expedited delivery of additional weapons and ammunition went unanswered. The absence of this assistance will significantly increase the toll in casualties in the conflict against Russia, Die Zeit reported.

Economist Christoph Trebes informed the newspaper that “the recently announced aid hit a record low between August and October 2023, nearly 90% lower than the same period in 2022.” Of the 42 countries that previously supported Kyiv, only 20 have pledged new support packages. The challenges faced by the U.S., which supplied most of the equipment and ammunition (42%), are particularly concerning.

European nations realize they cannot fully substitute American aid. Therefore, over 100 parliamentarians from the European Union have “urged Congress members through an open letter to approve financial assistance.” However, its impact remains uncertain, especially as Republicans have always stressed for “greater European involvement” in Ukraine. Even within the EU, doubts exist regarding continued funding for Ukraine. The German newspaper highlights that €50 billion in loans and grants “have dwindled.
