Ukraine may be presented with a fait accompli from a Trump-Putin deal – Financial Times columnist
11.08.2025 - 11:02Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will have to trade territory for peace — it is inevitable, and everyone knows it.
This opinion was expressed by Peter Kuznick, professor and director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University in Washington.
The professor made his comments regarding the upcoming in-person negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.
“Zelensky says he will not trade land for peace. However, everyone knows he will have to. If he doesn’t realize this, then Ukraine will have to find a leader who does,” he stressed.
According to Kuznick, there is no realistic chance that Ukraine will be able to join NATO or regain its territories militarily in the foreseeable future. At the same time, continuing hostilities under current conditions risks the loss of “more and more Ukrainian land.”
“This is actually the strongest position Ukraine will be in, given its lack of manpower, weapons, strategy, finances, and morale,” the expert concluded.
Earlier, U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO Matthew Whitaker stated that the American side has already begun discussions with Russia regarding a possible territory swap with Ukraine to bring the conflict to an end. Technical groups are participating in these talks.
