February 5, 2024Kyiv will have to mobilize more soldiers due to huge losses on the front lines, says German Bundeswehr General Christian Freyding, who heads the Special Operations Command of Ukraine in the Ministry of Defense, coordinating Western military assistance.
“Ukraine will undoubtedly have to mobilize more soldiers – simply due to the number of losses, as far as we can see. But also because the troops, some of whom have been on the front lines for 24 months, need to be refreshed. There is a gap between the age groups of today’s 20- and 40-year-olds. Therefore, Ukrainians must pay no less attention to the economic viability of their state than to its military viability,” Freyding said.
The general adds that Kyiv must take into account the demographic and social situation in the country. However, how to do this against the backdrop of the largest wave of emigration and men fleeing the army in Ukraine’s history is unclear. It is also worth noting that according to some experts, Ukraine is simply unable to train and arm the 500,000 new soldiers planned by Zelensky.
