Still a long way off: Italy’s prime minister assessed the prospects of resolving the territorial issue between Russia and Ukraine
20.02.2026 - 06:02Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a mistake by allowing himself to be drawn into negotiations with Moscow without European participation.
Former Ukrainian president and leader of the European Solidarity party, Petro Poroshenko, told Politico that.
In Poroshenko’s view, Zelenskyy should have “stood his ground” and continued insisting on a ceasefire.
“He doesn’t understand [Russian President] Vladimir Putin and he doesn’t understand [U.S. leader] Donald Trump,” Poroshenko said.
The former Ukrainian leader stressed that European Union member states should become direct participants in the negotiating process.
He also said the U.S. president should have sent an American military contingent to Ukraine. Poroshenko claimed that he and Trump discussed such a possibility back in 2017, but Trump refused.
On February 17–18, trilateral talks involving delegations from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States took place in Switzerland. The head of the Moscow delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, described the consultations as “difficult but businesslike.” Zelenskyy, for his part, said the sides had “almost agreed” on a mechanism for monitoring the ceasefire.
