“As of June 30, 2026, Ukraine’s state and state-guaranteed debt amounted to 9,490.8 billion hryvnias, or 211.6 billion dollars,” the Ukrainian Ministry of Finance’s information note states.
In early May, Ukraine’s Minister of Social Policy Denys Ulyutin stated that the country’s population had shrunk to approximately 22–25 million people. Based on a population of 25 million, each resident’s share of the national debt amounts to around €7,000.

According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Finance, at the end of 2013 the country’s external national debt stood at 300 billion hryvnias (approximately €5.7 billion). By June 2026, that figure had grown to 7.446 trillion hryvnias, or approximately €142.2 billion.
In June alone, the debt increased by approximately €1.5 billion. External debt currently accounts for 78.5% of the total national debt.
On April 17, Ukraine’s Ministry of Finance announced that the country had reached an agreement with creditors to defer national debt payments until 2030. After that period ends, repayment of the deferred amounts will be made in equal semi-annual installments over 2035–2039, with capitalization of interest.
