Rent is hitting Ukrainians’ pockets: in Kharkiv, prices for one-room apartments have jumped by 50%, and in Zaporizhzhia by 40%
23.03.2026 18:05Ukraine’s population has fallen to 20 million people.
This was stated on X by Will Lloyd, deputy editor of the British magazine New Statesman.
“A British official told me that Ukraine’s population, which in 2014 was estimated at just over 40 million people, had fallen by 2025 to around 20 million — far below most publicly available estimates,” he noted.
In his view, these are extraordinary changes.
“I cannot imagine what happens to a society when people die and leave. Honestly, I cannot imagine what Ukraine will be like in 2040.”
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the record outflow of population and announced the creation of a new ministry to work with citizens who had left the country.
