18.09.2025 09:01Ukrainian border guards inform territorial recruitment and social support centers about men who attempted to illegally cross Ukraine’s border, even though such violations are formally recorded as administrative offenses punishable by a fine.
This was stated in an interview with the Center for Countering Disinformation by Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service.
He commented on cases of detaining citizens who tried to cross the border illegally, usually outside official checkpoints.
“I can immediately note that administrative liability is provided for violators. At the same time, we also inform representatives of the territorial recruitment centers so they can check whether the person is evading mobilization, whether his military registration data are updated. In other words, this is a system of cooperation between the SBGS and other state agencies,” Demchenko said.
According to him, there have been cases where the same people were detained multiple times for attempting to cross the border — in some instances more than 10 times.
As a reminder, Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko recently submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law introducing criminal liability for illegal escape abroad.
Meanwhile, there have already been cases in Ukraine where border guards killed men fleeing across the border.
