Forty Ukrainian men have died while attempting to illegally cross the border.
This information reported according to Andriy Demchenko, the spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.
“Most of these cases occurred in rivers. People drowned because they overestimated their abilities. There have also been incidents in the mountains,” Demchenko said.
He noted that since August, the number of attempts to leave Ukraine has decreased, which is attributed to worsening weather conditions.
In May, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported 30 drownings in the Tisza River. Western media also reported that Ukraine had increased security along the Tisza River to prevent men of conscription age from fleeing the country.
