Ukrainian border guards saved a draft dodger who was trying to swim across the icy Tisa River to escape across the border

Border guards detained a draft dodger during an unsuccessful attempt to swim across the Tisza River to escape across the border.

This was reported by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

Border guards pulled the man out in a semi-conscious state when he was lying on the edge of the shore and showed almost no signs of life. First aid was provided to him, and he was taken to a unit where he was warmed up and provided with dry clothes.

The rescued man explained that he found an announcement about a “legal” border crossing on Telegram. However, upon arrival in Zakarpattia, instead of the promised official border crossing through a checkpoint, smugglers offered him to swim across the Tisza River at night. They charged him 5 thousand dollars for this.

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine notes that since February 24, 2022, 19 men have died on the Tisza.

The day before, border guards encountered a blogger who attempted to swim across the Tisza River during the day but failed to swim even a meter.

Nevertheless, some draft dodgers managed to swim across the Tisza River, even in winter. One of them posted a video reaching Romania and shared details of the experience.
