17.10.2025 - 10:30Ukrainian women who have moved to Poland are increasingly marrying local men — and the number of such marriages has sharply risen during the war.
This was reported by Polish Radio, citing data from the country’s Central Statistical Office (GUS).
According to the agency, in 2024, Poland recorded 2,021 marriages between Ukrainian women and Polish men, as well as 535 marriages between Ukrainian men and Polish women. For comparison, in 2023, there were 2,213 such marriages, and in 2015 — only 715.
“This should not come as a surprise. The same thing happened to us after Poland joined the EU: similar trends, with a short delay of a few years, were seen among Polish migrants, for example, in Ireland,” commented Professor Piotr Szukalski, a demographer from the University of Łódź.
In his study “Marriages of Ukrainian Citizens in Poland”, Szukalski noted that despite a record year for Polish-Ukrainian marriages, in 2024 Ukrainians concluded more marriages among themselves in Poland. According to statistics, for the first time in the past year, the number of Ukrainian-Ukrainian marriages in Polandexceeded that of Polish-Ukrainian unions.
At the same time, in Ukraine, the number of divorces in 2024 (141,800) nearly equaled the number of marriages (150,200).
It is worth noting that Ukraine’s “Diia” app recently launched an option to file for divorce online.
The downward trend in the number of marriages was already visible in 2023. According to data from the Opendatabot monitoring platform, in the first six months of 2023, 86,028 marriages were registered in Ukraine — 17% fewer than in the same period of the previous year, when 103,903 new families were recorded.
