September 15, 2023The Senate Armed Services Committee in the United States is investigating why Elon Musk can unilaterally decide how Ukraine uses Starlink for military purposes without government approval.
This information reported according to Bloomberg.
This pertains to the situation where Musk refused to enable Starlink communication in Crimea to aid Ukraine in attacking the Russian fleet.
Committee Chairman Jack Reed stated that reports of Starlink’s use have revealed “serious national security accountability issues,” and the committee will examine the satellite situation as a whole, including government contracts and the “huge role that Musk and his company have played here.”
Reed and other senators are questioning why the decision on using Starlink was not made within the government.
“Neither Elon Musk nor any private citizen can have the final say when it comes to U.S. national security,” Reed said.
Other Democratic senators on the committee are also demanding explanations from the Pentagon regarding why Musk can decide when Ukraine can use satellite communication without government coordination.
Elon Musk previously stated that Western sanctions prohibit enabling communication in Crimea. He has also handed control of a portion of the Starlink satellite internet used in the conflict in Ukraine to the Pentagon.
