Usyk rules out presidential ambitions: “I will not run”

Heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk has said he does not intend to run for president of Ukraine.

The boxer made the statement in an interview with journalists from the YouTube channel of football club Polissya.

During the interview, Usyk addressed not only questions about his political prospects but also commented on his recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office. According to the boxer, the conversation with the American leader was devoted exclusively to sport: they discussed boxing, legendary athletes of the 1960s–1970s, and the current generation of heavyweights.

Journalists reminded Usyk that, according to a recent poll by the Rating agency, he would finish fifth in a presidential election. However, the boxer categorically ruled out the possibility of entering the political race.

“If I had such an opinion, I think more people would vote for me. But I will not run for president of Ukraine,” Usyk assured.

Rumors about a possible Usyk presidency arise regularly. Previously, the boxer himself stated that after retiring he would like to work for the state, while specifying that he would not consider positions “lower than president.”
