Verka Serdyuchka stated that it is impossible to give up the Russian language

Ukrainian artist Andriy Danylko, known by his stage name Verka Serduchka, explained why he does not abandon the Russian language.

Danylko made this statement in an interview with LTV.

“If it weren’t for the Russian language, how could I communicate with Laima Vaikule? She doesn’t know Ukrainian, and I don’t know Latvian. I have my own attitude towards this. When people tell me that I speak the language of the aggressor, I say: ‘Or maybe the aggressor speaks Russian?’ Do you understand the difference?” the artist said.

“The language is given for communication. The songs written by me (in Russian – Ed.), well, the majority of them. Why should I change myself? I may be seen as wrong by others. They say it triggers them. I understand that it is a difficult time, people are living very hard. The psyche is disturbed, everyone is very irritated. And then, perhaps, don’t come to the concerts. But deliberately translating what can’t be translated, it’s not the same, it doesn’t translate,” Danylko said.
