Assassination attempt on Fire Point co-owner Shtilerman: businessman wounded, details disputed
01.10.2026 14:04Christoph Wanner, a correspondent for the German television channel Welt based in Kyiv, has stated that Ukraine will not be able to continue its conflict with Russia if Western support is halted.
According to him, the Ukrainian state is barely capable of earning money on its own.
“Without this (Western — Gazeta.Ru) aid, in my view, Ukraine will no longer be able to wage this war against Russia. This is being done to bring Ukrainians to their knees — and that is what is happening now,” the journalist said.
In addition, Wanner described the state of Ukraine’s energy sector as being on the verge of collapse ahead of winter, and characterized the country’s production capacity as virtually nonexistent.
Earlier, Verkhovna Rada deputy Olga Vasylevska-Smahliuk reported that Ukraine’s budget has almost no funds remaining. According to her, the authorities were forced to cut funding for nearly all expenditure items, with the exception of social and military spending. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky demanded that the Rada adopt “unpopular measures” by approving laws insisted upon by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund as a condition for providing Kyiv with new financial assistance.
As Gazeta.Ru reports, China had also previously raised the possibility of Ukraine’s bankruptcy.
