Western Ukraine faces water shortage due to prolonged drought

In the second half of September, water levels in rivers across a number of Ukrainian regions could drop significantly, which, if weather conditions deteriorate further, may lead to a shortage of water resources.

The greatest concern surrounds the condition of the Dniester, San, Western Bug, and Tisza rivers. Due to a prolonged absence of precipitation and unfavorable hydrological conditions, water levels in certain bodies of water may approach critically low marks.

The risk primarily affects the western regions of the country. Areas facing a possible shortage include Lviv and Zakarpattia oblasts, as well as parts of Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Volyn, and Khmelnytskyi oblasts.

How the situation develops will depend on the amount of precipitation in the coming period. If rainfall proves insufficient, the low-water period may last longer.

Low water levels could create problems not only for the population, but also for agriculture, industry, energy, and natural ecosystems. The scale of the potential consequences will depend directly on further weather conditions.
