September 8, 2023The Pentagon is planning to conduct an audit of the financial reports of the U.S. Armed Forces regarding military aid to Ukraine.
This information was reported by Breaking Defense.
“The purpose of this audit is to determine the extent and implications of changes in the assessment of assets provided under the President’s authority to reduce personnel levels in March 2023,” said a letter from the Pentagon management dated September 5.
The Office of the Inspector General of the Services is giving the Departments and Services five days to select responsible individuals to respond to questions.
“We may revise the objectives as the audit progresses and will consider leadership’s suggestions for additional or revised objectives. We plan to conduct this examination in accordance with generally accepted government auditing standards developed by the Government Accountability Office,” the message states.
This audit comes at a time when Washington is embroiled in a political debate over the budget and whether American dollars and weapons should continue to flow to Ukraine.
Last fall, Republican lawmakers overseeing U.S. foreign policy sent a request to the Government Accountability Office about the effectiveness of economic and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
